History of Sexual Identities in Canada

 Before 1969, same-sex relationships between consenting adults were considered crimes; the penalty was prison. Later that year, the government passed a bill making it legal for people over the age of 21 to sexual relations with someone of the same sex. In 1977, Québec became the first province in Canada to add sexual orientation to the province's Charter of Human Rights section on discrimination, therefore making it illegal.
