History of Sexual Identities in Canada

Before 1969, same-sex relationships between consenting adults were considered crimes; the penalty was prison. Later that year, the government passed a bill making it legal for people over the age of 21 to sexual relations with someone of the same sex. In 1977, Québec became the first province in Canada to add sexual orientation to the province's Charter of Human Rights section on discrimination, therefore making it illegal.

  1. Good job Katie! I didn't know that the punishment was imprisonment. I also didn't know that Quebec-of all provinces-was the first to add sexual orientation to their rights! Quite well written- I wish there was more information. Keep up the good work Katie! :)

    2. I leaned quite a bit from this as well, like Mikaela I had no idea about the punishment of jail or that Quebec was the first to put sexual orientation in their human rights. Good job Katie!
